Mrs. Mabry & Mrs. Wilson's Kindergarten - What's Up with K2!

For our Kindergarten curriculum, here are some of the subjects we are currently studying:

Language Arts:

Our class is working with rhyming words, beginning sight words, and our predecodable books.  These books come home in your Friday folder every week.  Please let your child read these again with you.  These books have a rebus (picture) for some of the larger words and also sight words they are learning in class. They will progress to books with more and more sight words.  The more practice they get with these words, the better!

Sounds and Handwriting

Using our Imagine It! curriculum and Handwriting Without Tears, we have studied capital letters A through M.  We are making sure we know the sounds they make, what they look like, and how to write them.  We will go back and work with lower case letters (a) through (m) over the next few weeks.  They are grasping these concepts easily!

Math

K2 is a class full of math whizzes!  We are doing a lot manipulative work with our pattern blocks, talking about shapes, making graphs, and writing numbers 1through 10 correctly.

Science

We are deep into our animal unit – we are currently researching animal habitats, such as caves, water, desert, jungle, ice and snow, oceans, forests, our pets at home, and farm animals.  We would like to have pictures of your family’s pets to display in our classroom.  If you don’t have a pet, your child may bring in a picture of a pet they’d like to have (from a magazine, etc), or they may draw a picture and bring that in.

Geography

We are learning where Tennessee is on the map, as well as the USA, the continent of North America and the larger countries in North America as well.  We are incorporating our Flat Stanley project into our geography curriculum as well as other parts of our curriculum, and hopefully we will receive your family’s Flat Stanley back from the family/organization address you gave us soon.  The children love getting mail, photos, etc. back from their Flat Stanley’s trip, and we make displays of each Flat Stanley returned to show the whole school.

Computer

Our Computer Lab is on Thursdays - we are learning where the letters are on the keyboard and practicing mouse skills.  Ask your child who Keystone the Dragon is!

Art

In Art, we have been talking about color.  We created some warm color and cool color pictures with watercolors.  We studied several prints with different types of color, from the following artists:

Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Hunters in the Snow, Helen Frankenthaler, Blue Atmosphere, Paul Gauguin, Tahitian Landscape with a Mountain, Pable Picasso, Le Gourmet, Henri Matisse, Purple Robe and Anemones

Our class loved studying each print and picking out details from them.  We could spend a lot of time just looking at the prints!

Next, we will learn about lines.  Kindergarten always has fun discovering and creating different types of lines.  Be sure to check out our gallery for our latest creations!

Bible

In Bible, we are talking about the Fruits of the Spirit, from Galatians 5:22.  They are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,  Gentleness and Self-Control.  We discuss one each week.  Our class is very good at discussion :)
