St. Peter's SPROUTS
Click the link on the right to download a complete listing of SPROUTS meetings. "GROW" ST. PETER'S ORGANIC GARDEN! It is Summer Growing Time in our school garden, and the vegetables are plentiful! We have Zephyr Squash, a variety of Tomatoes, Basil, Dill, and Fennel ready to harvest. In a few weeks, Cucumbers, a variety of Eggplant, Corn, Broccoli, Blueberries, Blackberries, and more Tomatoes will be ready to enjoy too!
· A full-time physical education and wellness program with new faculty member Blaes Schmissrauter. A softball coach (and former St. Peter’s student), she focuses on movement concepts and specialized locomotor skills while emphasizing sportsmanship and healthy living. · A lunch program provided by Greenlife Grocery / Whole Foods. This optional program provides a daily hot meal, three alternate meal choices and organic milk to students and faculty. These meals incorporate healthy, fresh food and make use of organic and local food products wherever possible. New earth friendly trays, reusable drink ware and water dispensers also assist the school’s efforts in reducing waste. · Creation of a student organization, the St. Peter’s Sprouts. This health and wellness-minded group of students helped create a program for weekly campus-wide recycling and holds monthly meetings to take field trips and host visitors on related topics. · The planting of the school’s first-ever organic garden. With the help of our SPROUTS club and school families, the garden’s yield will provide food to be incorporated into school lunches as well as provide fresh produce to be distributed via St. Peter’s Church food pantry. This space will also serve as an “edible classroom” for students and teachers to integrate lessons in math, science and social development for all ages. · Partner in The First Lady’s “Let’s Move” bold campaign to eradicate childhood obesity within a generation. St. Peter’s is one of 35 organizations from around the nation collaborating on the development of the “Let’s Move” toolkit for faith-based and community organizations. · Encouraging students, parents and faculty to incorporate healthy, low sugar food items in snacks and lunches sent from home as well as birthday and classroom parties. · School-wide participation in the Blue Cross Blue Shield “Walking Works” program, which includes physical activity in EVERY teacher and student’s day. Many students also participate in classroom-based activities and exercises, such as Brain Dance and Neuronet. |
